How to share SOLIDWORKS templates by using 3DExperience bookmarks

It is common to share SOLIDWORKS templates such as sheet formats, standard library components etc. between different users in the company.

Templates can be stored under 3DExperience bookmarks and those bookmarks can be defined in SOLIDWORKS File Location settings. Multiple file location settings are supported (see THIS LINK). For example SOLIDWORKS drawing sheet format templates can be shared and here are the instructions for that. You can use the procedure to store any other supported template types.

STEP 1 - CREATE THE BOOKMARK IN 3DEXPERIENCE

1. Navigate to your 3DExperience platform, launch "Bookmark Editor" and select "New Bookmark" icon to create a new bookmark.

2. Type as descriptive name as possible, for example "SOLIDWORKS Sheet Formats" and press "Create".

3. Locate and select the newly created bookmark. You can now upload content to this bookmark. You can use any of these three methods:

A: Add Existing Content - If files are already stored in 3DExperience

B: Use drag and drop - You can navigate to Windows File Explorer and drag and drop files on top of the newly created bookmark.

C: Upload - You can navigate to folder and select the files to be uploaded from "Open" dialog.

4. Start uploading by selecting "Upload" button and wait until the files have been uploaded.

When you have files visible under Title column, everything is set up with new bookmark and you can move to SOLIDWORKS interface to define SOLIDWORKS File Location settings.

STEP 2 - DEFINE THE BOOKMARK IN SOLIDWORKS FILE LOCATIONS SETTINGS

5. Now you can switch to SOLIDWORKS interface. If you are using SOLIDWORKS Desktop license (not 3DExperience SOLIDWORKS Connected), please make sure that you have "3DExperience" add-in enabled in SOLIDWORKS and you are logged in.

6. Select "Tools > Options > System Options > File Locations" and scroll down to "Sheet Formats" from dropdown menu. Press "Add" button!

Note: You might have already a folder(s) defined for sheet formats. If none of those templates defined in settings are not to be used, you can press "Delete" button to delete those unwanted folder locations.

7. After pressing "Add" button, instead of selecting a folder please click the button "Select from 3DEXPERIENCE". Then just select the previously created bookmark and press the "Select" button to add that bookmark. Bookmark appears in File Location settings with its name inside square brackets.

8. Now everything is ready. Now you can repeat steps 5-7 in every SOLIDWORKS workstation where these shared templates need to be used.
