See attachment "Large assembly tips: details" for details and clarifications.
Working with large assemblies in Solidworks can be time consuming. Opening/editing these assemblies and their respective drawings can cause long waiting times and unstable software behaviour. Below is a list of measures to make large assemblies easier to manage.
Tips: Most of the listed measures below can be already done upon assembly creation. It is always easier to make the right adjustments from the start than repairing an erroneous/heavy assembly!
# | Category | Scenario | Measure |
▣ |
1 | General | I have the possibility to use a newer version of Solidworks. |
Upgrade Solidworks |
□ |
2 | The assembly and/or its sub-components were created using a previous version of Solidworks. |
Convert all files to latest version |
□ | |
3 | The assembly contains a significant amount of mates on the top-level and/or mate errors & warnings. |
Create sub-assemblies / reduce the numer of mates on the top-level |
□ | |
4 |
Favour standard mates over advanced/mechanical mates |
□ | ||
5 |
Repair all mate errors
|
□ | ||
6 | Open | I want to improve performance when opening the file. |
Use Open… with the right settings (see below) |
□ |
7 | I only want to review / visualise the model. |
Large Design Review |
□ | |
8 |
I want to work with the assembly without extended troubleshooting or sub-component editing. The assembly is neither Routing nor Flexible. N.B.: the components saved as lightweight won't load in Composer. |
Lightweight |
□ | |
9 | I need to troubleshoot and repair the assembly as well as editing the sub-components. File opening time is not an issue. |
Resolved *Resolved can be combined with Large Assembly Settings to improve slightly the performance |
□ | |
10 | I want the best compromise between a quick file opening time and using Resolved mode's editing capabilities. |
Activate automatically optimize resolved mode (System Options > Performance) |
□ | |
11 | The assembly contains hidden components that do not need to get loaded when opening. |
Deactivate Load hidden components |
□ | |
12 | The assembly contains components made lighter by using Speedpak. |
Activate Use Speedpak |
□ | |
13 | The assembly contains Display States which improve performance by e.g. hiding components. |
Select the appropriate Display State |
□ | |
14 | The assembly contains simplified configurations. |
Select the appropriate Configuration |
□ | |
15 | Sub-components in the assembly have simplified configurations with the same name (e.g. "Simplified"). |
Select Configuration <Advanced>
|
□ | |
16 | Evaluate | I want to see a summary of factors affecting the performance of my assembly. |
Performance Evaluation |
□ |
17 | I want to identify components in the assembly that are the heaviest to render. |
Assembly Visualization More… Total Graphics Triangles |
□ | |
18 | Simplify | I am unsure whether to use display state or configuration... |
Display State |
□ |
19 | The assembly contains a substantial amount of small components that do not need to be shown. |
Add Display State Select by Size.. Hide |
□ | |
20 | One or several components have a high number of Total Graphics Triangles with details which are not relevant for the assembly. These details do not need to be shown in the assembly. |
Open Part Defeature *Keep functional details only (e.g. the ones used in mates) *Name the configuration ”Simplified” |
□ | |
21 | One or several components have a high number of Total Graphics Triangles with details which are not relevant for the assembly. These details need to be shown in the assembly. |
Open Part Add SpeedPak *Keep functional details only (e.g. the ones used in mates) |
□ | |
22 | One or several sub-assemblies do not need to be edited on the part level and the sub-assemblies' editing capabilities will never be needed. | Save As Part (n.b. limitations!) | □
23 | Drawings | The large assembly has been repaired and simplified. It can be opened and modified with acceptable performance. However, the drawing is still slow and unmanageable... | See below | □ |
24 | Simplified configurations and display states were created. |
Select appropriate Display States / Configurations in drawing views
|
□ | |
25 | The drawing contains many drawing views. |
Reduce the number of drawing views Create several documents with fewer views |
□ | |
26 | The drawing contains many section/crop views. | Reduce the number of / Avoid unnecessary section och crop views | □
27 | I want to open the drawing quick with limited editing capabilities. |
Open in Detailing mode |
□ | |
28 | I only need to work with one drawing view at a time. | Hide non-used drawing views |
□ |
|
29 | I do not need to see view updates in real time. |
Deactivate automatic view update Defer view update |
□ |
Most common scenarios |
The assembly and/or its sub-components were creates with an older version of Solidworks. |
The assembly contains a significant amount of small components such as screws and/or bearings with detailed threads and balls. |
The assembly contains a substantial amount of complex and/or multi-body imported components. |
