Platform Manager vs User in 3DExperience

In this article you will learn about the differences between a member and an administrator on the 3DExperience platform.

First of all, since the word administrator can have such a heavy meaning when it comes to IT, we will call these users Platform Managers instead.

What is a Platform Manager?

A Platform Manager is a regular user but with a bit more permissions.

It is like and administrator but on the platform, there isn’t much an IT-person can do. The only things that is IT related is whether or not users can install, and where users should download installations files from. Either from Dassault Systèmes own servers or a local server. But even if the users are eligible to install from the platform according to the settings on the platform, the permission on the computer itself comes down to policies within the company.

So, the Platform Manager manages the platform itself but is also at the same time a regular user that uses the system.

As a Platform Manager, you will make sure that all the users have what they need, and that the platform is set up according to how your company want your users to work.

What can a Platform Manager do?

As a Platform Manager you will be the user that will manage what users can do but also how the files behave when stored and worked with on the platform.

For example, you can setup rules when certain things can be done and by whom, what files should be called with auto generated names, manage users and their roles and much more.

You can also setup your platform in such a way that the correct information is displayed on the different file types. For example, one kind of information should only be displayed on Office document and a different kind of information on CAD-files.

Where should each user be able to read files from, all Collaborative spaces on the platform or only just a specific Collaborative space. Should files be visible to all users or not when they have been released?

These are just a few examples of what can be managed on the platform.

As mentioned in the first part of this article, even the Platform Manager will count as a user. When they do not change how the platform works, they will also use the applications that is accessible to them.

What is a User?

A user is as it sounds, someone that uses the system that has been setup for them.

The user will work with the files stored on the platform through applications that you use in the web browser or through applications that you install locally on your computer.

You might have a few users who not even create files on the platform, but even these users have applications that they can use there. One example of this is, a project manager who might only manage what other users should do and therefor setup tasks for these users.

What each user can do and will do is managed by the platform manager.

A user can have different rights in various places, one place is in a collaborative space where the files are stored. One user can have rights to only read the files but not edit them and one can be an owner of them so they can do a little bit more with the files.

What can a User do?

It all depends on what each specific user should do.

One user should work with SolidWorks and create files, and another should create projects and tasks for other users.

So, it all comes down to what role each specific User have, what they can do.
